Why Exosome?

In recent years, exosomes have become one of the most closely watched research topics in regenerative medicine and premium skincare. However, exosome products vary greatly in quality, source, and manufacturing technology. Understanding the science behind exosomes can therefore help consumers choose products that better suit their needs.

An exosome is a type of extracellular vesicle naturally secreted by cells, measuring approximately 30–150 nanometres in diameter. It is not a cell, but an important messenger between cells. Exosomes can carry proteins, lipids, messenger RNA, microRNA, and other bioactive molecules involved in intercellular communication and regulation.

In recent years, many studies have explored the use of exosomes in skin science. Published research indicates that exosomes are associated with several important biological mechanisms, including:

  • Maintaining skin-barrier function
  • Supporting the skin’s moisture-retention capacity
  • Supporting mechanisms related to collagen and the extracellular matrix
  • Helping regulate oxidative stress
  • Participating in biological responses related to wound healing
  • Regulating inflammatory responses
  • Promoting cell-to-cell communication

It is important to note that research is still evolving. Exosomes from different sources, manufacturing processes, and methods of application may have different biological characteristics, so not all exosome products should be regarded as equivalent.

The source of an exosome is an important factor in assessing product quality. Exosomes currently studied may come from human mesenchymal stem cells, plants, roses, Centella asiatica, or other natural sources. Different sources carry different proteins, RNA, and bioactive molecules, so their research focus and potential applications may also vary.

Manufacturing technology and quality management are just as important as source. When selecting an exosome product, consumers can look beyond whether it contains exosomes and consider whether the brand discloses the source, manufacturing process, purification technology, quality controls, and supporting scientific research. Transparent product information and sound quality management are generally more meaningful than a high-concentration claim alone.

As exosome research continues to advance rapidly, related technologies may play an increasingly important role in skin science, regenerative medicine, and aesthetics. Understanding the scientific foundations and research background can help consumers distinguish between products and make more informed choices based on evidence and quality assurance.
